Every year at the Retreat we set up a Boutique full of items we don't normally carry in the shop as well as some of our newer items. We also feature some items based on the theme of our Retreat. This year our theme was "Fabric" - our two projects were on on felt and banding, I did a demo of how to dye fabric with coffee and tea, and we stocked our Boutique with overdyed fabric from YLI (made in Germany), R&R fabrics, and hand painted fabric from Crossed Wing Collection. We are able to keep the Crossed Wing hand painted fabric in the shop through the end of this month. It is beautiful linen and I thought you might like the opportunity of seeing it in person if you are able to come in or ordering it if you can see it online.
I've posted a photo of "Cottage Garden" - it's very pretty and just one example of their hand painted fabric. A lot of their fabrics are wonderful for outside scenes - skies, grasses, backgrounds, etc. Each piece of 28-count 100% fabric is washed in a special detergent to remove sizing, soaked in an activator to help the fabric better take the dye, then laid out flat and painted, blending several colors to achieve a subtle mottling. It then cures for 24 to 48 hours, after which it is washed several times in hot water and detergent to remove excess dye, making it color-fast. After drying and pressing it is ready for your needle and thread--and your imagination!
