Tuesday Tidbits & a Recipe (resend)
Sent: May 7, 2008
Hi Stitchers -
Welcome to our new weekly email. "Tuesday Tidbits" will be something a little different every week. We'll answer your questions, give you some stitching tips or information, or pass on something from you to our other customers. The more you respond or participate, the better these emails will be. So read on, and feel free to forward this to your stitching friends.
A couple of new patterns from Cherished Stitches came into the shop last week and prompted the questions, "what is etui?" and "what is a huswif?" The only answer I had at the time was, "they sound french and must have something to do with stitching!" It then occurred to me that this would be the perfect topic for the first "Tuesday Tidbits"so I looked them up. An etui is a small, usually ornamental case for holding small articles such as needles. A huswife is a case for sewing materials. Further research revealed that during the 18th and 19th century, before the days of pockets on clothing, women carried them in the large tie-on pockets worn under their skirts. During the civil war, men were sent into battle with their huswifs so they could sew on buttons and mend their uniforms.
Many of you know Tonia who works in the shop with me - she will be leaving us at the end of this week to pursue a full time position with a company downtown. We will miss her terribly but wish her well with her new job. You may continue to see her on some Saturdays in the shop, at a stitchin, and definitely at the Retreat. So she won't be completely gone!
I am lucky to have already found someone to take her place and you will hear a new voice on the phone and see a new face in the shop. Liz (yes, another Liz!) started working today and Tonia will be training her over the next few days. I think we'll be lucky to have her with us! Please help me welcome her as you come into the shop.
We had one of the most fun Stitch-Ins ever this past weekend. The salad bar was awesome and the desserts better than ever. Here's the recipe for the Chocolate Cake that a lot of people requested. I've also got the recipe for the Strawberry Cheesecake Trifle that was served but it seems to have gone missing - I'll pass it on when I find it!
2 c flour
2 c sugar
1/2 tsp salt
2 eggs well beaten
1 tsp soda
1/2 c buttermilk
1 stick oleo plus 1/2 c shortening or 2 sticks oleo
1 c water
3 T cocoa
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
Sift flour, add sugar & salt. Put aside. In sauce pan put oleo, water, & cocoa. Stir to bring to boil. Pour hot mixture over flour & sugar mixture and set aside. In another bowl beat eggs, add soda, buttermilk & vanilla. Add this to above mixture and mix well. Bake in greased shallow cake pan. Bake 20 min at 350 degrees.
Icing: (start last 5 minutes of baking)
1 stick oleo
6 T milk
1/2 c pecans
3 T cocoa
1 box powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla
In sauce pan mix oleo, cocoa, & milk. Heat over low flame and DO NOT BOIL. Remove from heat, add sugar, pecans, and vanilla. Mix well. Frost cake as soon as out of oven.
